Project Management

Regarding project management and co-ordination, the work is to manage by objectives the WP's activities according to the workplan.

WorkPackage Group 1

Network Studies

The primary aim is planning and evaluation of multilayer resilient network based on the study of newtwork requirements. The object of the study will be the integration of a server Optical Transport Network layer and different client layers (SDH, IP, ATM, etc.) Various resilience strategies will be provided (single layer versus multilayer, dedicated versus shared, coordinated versus independent, etc.). Different case studies will be defined and analysed (SDH on WDM, IP on WDM, IP on SDH on WDM). Optimisation of the network will be carried out taking into account performance, cost, network evolution strategy and technical feasibility. The WPG1 will work out guidelines which will be used in the testbed

WorkPackage Group 2

Interfaces, OA&M and Management

The overriding aim is to set up architectures, interfaces, management, OA&M and implementation characteristics.

WorkPackage Group 3

Testbed

The main object is to set up a flexible and advanced experimental platform of multilayer networking, based on a client independent OTN, by which test and validate the concepts developed in the project. Among the general network scenarios envisaged in WPG1, a configuration subset will be selected, focusing on interworking and resilience aspects, and experiments will be run and analysed. High demanding QoS applications (e.g. videoconferencing), identified in WPG1, will be selected in order to test the QoS of multilayer network in the testbed. Interfaces (between clients and OTN and between transparent domains), sub-systems (for integrated OA&M signalling) and software (for umbrella management system) designed and implemented in WPG2, advanced IP-router will be integrated.
